§ 01 · The Reality

Bullying isn't a phase.

Bullying is a practiced behavior. It's rehearsed on the playground, in the hallway, in the group chat. Kids who are targeted aren't weak — they're untrained. The difference between a bullied child and a confident one isn't size, athleticism, or bravado. It's a specific, teachable set of skills.

DEFENDER closes that gap early. We train the first five seconds — posture, voice, awareness, and calibrated action — so your child walks into any room without leaving a soft target. This isn't self-defense in the action-movie sense. It's daily armor.

"The kids who don't get bullied aren't the biggest ones. They're the ones who know what to do in the first five seconds."

§ 02 · The Framework

Three words.
One child who can't be targeted.

Pillar 01
Assert.
Own your space. Speak with power.
We start with the body. A child who stands tall, occupies their space, and speaks with measured volume is already 80% safer on day one. Through posture drills, verbal boundary scripts, and voice-projection practice, kids learn to signal unavailability — the single clearest deterrent a bully reads.

§ 08b · Why this works

Built in real schools. Proven on real kids.

DEFENDER started as a pro-bono initiative through our nonprofit CINA, deployed across 43 Newark Public Schools and over over 1,500 kids per year since 2019. We watched what actually worked when a nervous fourth-grader walked into a tough hallway on a Monday morning.

What you're seeing here is the refined, private version of that curriculum — the same drills, the same instructors, delivered at parent-premium cadence. No theory. No grant-speak. Just the five-second skills kids actually use.

§ 03 · Know The Difference

Not every conflict is bullying.
Teach your child the difference.

❤️

Kind

Someone is being nice on purpose.

"Nice shirt!" — They mean it.
⚠️

Accident

No one meant to hurt you.

A ball hits you at recess.
😠

Mean

Someone hurt you on purpose — one time.

"You're ugly." Said once in anger.
🚫

Bullying

Repeated, on purpose, with a power imbalance.

Same kid pushes you every day.
DEFENDER kids know which is which — and what to do about each.
§ 04 · The Protocol

Eight steps.
One defender.

01
D
Discern
Recognize the threat. Know the difference.
I am smart enough to know the difference.
02
E
Establish
Set your personal boundaries.
My boundaries matter. I decide what I accept.
03
F
Focus
Control your emotions under pressure.
A real fighter stays calm. I control my mind.
04
E
Exit
Remove yourself from danger. Walking away is strategy, not weakness.
Walking away makes me strong, not weak.
05
N
Notify
Tell a trusted adult. Reporting is not snitching.
Speaking up is brave. I am not alone.
06
D
Defend
Protect yourself physically — as a LAST RESORT. Create space to escape.
I defend myself to get safe — never to hurt.
07
E
Empower
Build the confidence to stand up for yourself and others.
I am powerful. My voice matters.
08
R
Reflect & Recover
Learn from every experience. Come back stronger.
I learn. I grow. I come back stronger.
§ 05 · The Three D's

What they do when it happens to a friend.

Bystander intervention — because most bullying is witnessed, not experienced. We train defenders, not just survivors.

1 · Direct

DIRECT

"Hey, that's not cool. Stop."

Speak up to the person causing harm. Takes courage. Not every kid is ready for this — that's why we have the other two.

2 · Distract

DISTRACT

"Hey, come play with us instead."

Redirect attention. Break the dynamic. Powerful, safe, works without confrontation.

3 · Delegate

DELEGATE

"Let's go find Ms. Rivera."

Get help from an adult. Leadership, not snitching. Reporting protects people. Takes strength to ask for help.

Reporting = trying to get someone OUT of trouble. Snitching = trying to get someone IN trouble. We teach the difference.
